Charity Tournament in Memory of Chris Palles

Monday 27th August

The 2018 Presidnet’s tournament was postponed this year and instead a Charity tournament was held in memory of one of the Club’s best loved players, Chris Palles, who had tragically passed away recently. The chosen charity was Sobell House Hospice where Chris was cared for during his last days. Chris’ family, wife Anne, daughters Katherine and Claire along with their children came along to watch a record 32 members battle it out on a fine afternoon.

With 32 players, which fortunately were split down the middle as far as gender was concerned, the tournament organiser, Dave Smith, had to create four groups of four pairs. It was decided each pair would play eight games against the other three pairs in their group such that everyone would play 24 games. As this was an American tournament the ladies switched partners after four games and players kept a tally of their individual scores. With four groups all playing simultaneously all eight courts were required for each round and it was wonderful to see so many of Chris’ friends enjoying their tennis.

At the end of the 24 games the lady and gentleman in each group with the highest individual scores played in a short semi final (best of five games) to determine who would be in the grand final. In the first semi-final Bianca and Charles came out winners against Rebecca and Brian, whilst in the other semi-final Mem and Tim overcame Nicola and Stephen. The rest of the competitors and spectators then settled down to a wonderful afternoon tea supplied by several members of the club in order to watch a thrilling final.

The format of the final was to be a normal set and was contested by Mem Aldridge partnered by Tim Janisch against Bianca Walker and Charles Freeman. The final was great spectator sport with both pairs playing some great tennis but in the end Mem and Tim just pipped Bianca and Charles by six games to four and were declared the winners.

A truly magnificent total of £450 was raised for the very worth cause of Sobell House Hospice.
